What is Interdisciplinary Design?

The Merging of
Disciplines

We are NSCAD graduates who specialize in a unique design major: Interdisciplinary Design. Our approach to design is dynamic, with our tool kit of design disciplines and methodologies. This holistic approach to design means we know when to use the right tools for the right job for the most effective outcome.

We have emerged from this degree with strong teamwork, communication and problem solving skills. We aim to help our clients communicate effectively, enhance efficiency and innovate something new.

Product Design

Product Design is the process of imagining, creating, and iterating products that solve users’ problems or address specific needs in a given market.

AR/VR

Augmented Relaity is computer-generated simulations imposed over real world media. Virtual Reality is a complete immersive digital experience.

Speculative

Scenarios and prototypes proposing alternative realities, to anticipate new materials, changing landscapes, and future technologies.

Photography

The art of producing images and creating an occupation in capturing images.

Entrepreneurship

The process of designing, launching and running a new business, often initially a small business.

Illustration

An illustration is an interpretation or visual explanation of a text, concept or process. Illustrations are often designed for published media.

Spacial Design

Focuses on the flow of people between multiple areas of interior and exterior environments, delivering value and understanding in spaces across both the private and public realm.

Design Thinking

A methodology for how designers solve problems. The five stages are: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The process is iterative.

Communication

Develops the relationship between the viewer and visuals to communicate a clear message and express information.

Critical Thinking

A form of judgement is created by analyzing facts. This problem solving ability is a form of self discipline and direction, and expansive thinking.

Behaviour Design

How design can shape, or be used to influence human behaviour, and applies valuable insights in how to solve design challenges of changing behaviour.

Typography

Great care is taken in how letters and words are arranged on a page. When words are displayed, this technique makes written languages legible, readable and appealing.

Social Justice

Based on the concepts of human rights and equality, and studies the impact of design’s capabilities to influence change.

Technology

A collaboration of techniques, skills, methods, and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation.

Human Centered

An approach to problem solving by having empathy for the people you’re designing for. This involves sharing the entire process with the target audience.

Videography

A discipline that applies graphic design principles to filmmaking and video production through use of animation and visual effects.

Systems Design

The process of defining the architecture, modules, interfaces, and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements.

Sustainability

The philosophy of designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply with the principles of ecological sustainability.

Game Design

Applies design and aesthetics to create a digital game. These games can be for entertainment, educational, exercise, or for experimental purposes.

Collaboration

Similar to cooperation, collaboration is the process of two or more people or organizations working together to complete a task or achieve a goal.

3D Modelling

Through specialized software, the surface of a three dimensional object is developed by a mathematical representation. The product is called a 3D model.

UI/UX

UX design encompasses all aspects of the back-end interactions with an interface or product. UI focuses on the front-end design and functionality of a product.

Book Design

The art of integrating the content, style, format, design, and sequence of the various components and elements of a book into a flowing and coherent unit.

Identity Design

Businesses convey their brand to customers using intangible and tangible elements like logos, company culture and messaging.

Iconography

The design of content being translated into imagery and icons that aid in understanding the information.

What the Future Holds

There is more to interdisciplinary design than meets the eye. Our graduating class is leaving NSCAD equipped with the necessary tools to design meaningful and helpful solutions.

Designers who graduate from NSCAD with this degree go on to becoming Art Directors, Entrepreneurs and Creators of all kinds. We are now ready to show our communities the value we can bring to business, inclusivity and sustainability.

Interdisciplinary design is an emerging field that is becoming increasingly necessary in our rapidly changing world.
